A TikTok link in bio is a strategic method for turning viewers into customers.
Before officially launching his hydration company, Waterboy, Mike Xhaxho set up a TikTok account with a link in bio to a Shopify lead capture form.
“In the event that I made some videos on social and they did take off, I wouldn’t miss the boat, and I’d have the ability to capture that traffic,” Mike says on Shopify Masters.
Within a few days, the brand—which had no products—gained 20,000 email and SMS subscribers.
Ahead, learn about what you need to add a link to your TikTok bio, how to add one, and workarounds if you don’t meet TikTok’s link in bio requirements.
TikTok bio link requirements
TikTok lets you add one clickable link to your bio. To enable this feature, you need to meet one of these requirements:
- A personal account with more than 1,000 followers
- A Verified Business Account, meaning you’ve completed TikTok’s process for registering your business
You need to be 18 or older to verify a TikTok business account, but it’s free to do so—you simply need to upload a document that verifies your business. In the US, that document must show your employer identification number (EIN) and legal business name, plus come from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
Once you’re set up, you’ll have access to TikTok business account features including TikTok’s post scheduler and promoted posts. Follow these steps to open a verified business account on TikTok:
1. In the TikTok app, navigate to Settings and privacy > Account > Business verification.
2. Agree to TikTok’s Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, select Get started, then submit information on your business including your country or region and website.
3. Upload a business verification document, select whether you’d like to verify your access to your business through a voice call or SMS message, then select Submit.
How to add a website link to your TikTok bio
Once you’ve registered for a business account or hit the 1,000 follower mark on your personal account, you can add a website or landing page link to your TikTok bio. Here’s how:
1. Open the TikTok mobile app, then select the profile icon in the bottom right corner of the screen to get to your bio page.
2. Select the Edit button next to your username.
3. Next to Links, select Add.
4. Enter your URL.
Alternatives to adding a link to your TikTok bio
If you don’t meet the requirements to add a link to your TikTok bio, you can still direct users to other sites. Here are a few options:
Non-clickable URL
Type a domain (e.g., yoursite.com) in your bio text to direct viewers to an external site. Make it short and easy to remember, like Piecework Puzzles’ straightforward pieceworkpuzzles.com, so that users can remember your URL and type it into the address bar.
If your URL is long, you can use a URL shortener like TinyURL or Bitly.
Non-clickable social media handle
To get around TikTok’s restriction on links that open other social media platforms, add your other account handles with a note on which platform they’re for. Dip brand Cotto, for example, includes “@getcotto on insta” in its TikTok bio. This tells users where to find the company on Instagram without the need for clickable social links.
In-video CTAs
Use video captions and voiceovers to share calls to action (CTAs). Although you can’t add clickable links to your captions, you can type out URLs.
In this example, jewelry and accessories brand Heaven Mayhem shared their website to direct viewers to shop the new Heaven On Holiday collection.
TikTok Shop
You may not be able to add links to a TikTok video, but if you set up a TikTok Shop, you can tag products for a similar effect.
Shopify store owners can download the TikTok app from the Shopify App Store to get started. This app lets you sync inventory and order details between your ecommerce site and your TikTok Shop.
Link-in-bio tools for TikTok
If you want to add multiple links to your TikTok bio, you can use a link-in-bio tool. These apps are essentially landing page builders with templates that help make your link-in-bio page feel like an extension of your profile page.
Here are a few options:
LinkShop
LinkShop is a bio link tool with a Shopify app that lets customers browse products and add items to their cart without leaving the LinkShop landing page. It comes with pre-designed themes and a drag-and-drop editor, so you won’t need coding know-how to set it up. The app lets you customize your landing page with colors, fonts, and images.
Pricing
LinkShop costs $15 per month. Free seven-day trial available.
Linktree
Linktree is a landing page builder with a Shopify app that connects to your store catalog to create a mini storefront. The free version of Linktree comes with unlimited links (including social icons), but you’ll need to upgrade to a paid plan if you want to add your logo or customize template colors.
Pricing
Free plan available. Paid plans start at $6 per month.
Hoo.be
Hoo.be is a link-in-bio tool geared toward creators, but you can use its features for your ecommerce brand, too. Hoo.be’s drag-and-drop page builder supports video and social media embeds, as well as carousels and product showcases.
However, Hoo.be doesn’t have a Shopify app, so you’ll need to add your products manually.
Pricing
Free plan available. Paid plans start at $8 per month.
